Your muffler, of course, is the tail end of your car’s exhaust system. Your vehicle’s engine generates a lot of carbon monoxide, which is channeled out through the exhaust manifold and into your muffler, which then sends the fumes out from under the back of your vehicle.

And as the name suggests, your muffler also helps give you a quiet ride. Most of the noise your engine makes is muffled by your muffler.

How do you know if you need a muffler repair or exhaust repair?

There are several signs you may need muffler repair. Some of these may be caused by other issues, so we may need to rule some things out.

If you notice any of these signs, you may need a muffler repair or exhaust repair. In some cases, you will need to have some parts replaced. Once we have your vehicle up on the lift, we’ll be able to diagnose the exact issue(s).

Signs include:

  • Your car is noisier than usual. A failing muffler means the exhaust is louder.
  • If you hear a sound like someone shaking a box full of coins, you may have an issue with your catalytic converter.
  • You notice a vibration. This could be coming from a disconnected part or leak in the exhaust system.
  • You notice a bad smell coming from underneath your car. This is an URGENT issue. If your muffler is leaking carbon monoxide, the fumes could seep into the car interior. Breathing in enough carbon monoxide can kill you.
